GEORGE RYDER was born on 10th June 1839 at Turner Bridge, Tong, near Bolton.
For several years he was associated with Mr. William Ryder, of Bolton, in making tools, fluted rollers, spindles, flyers, &c. The Ryder forging machine now so extensively used was for the most part his work, and many of the machines for making the fluted rollers used in the machinery for spinning cotton were perfected by him.
In 1865 he founded the firm of Thomas Ryder and Son, Turner Bridge Iron Works, for the same business, which he successfully carried on until his decease, employing a large number of hands.
For many years he was managing director of the Bolton Union Spinning Co.; and for six years he served on the Town Council of Bolton.
His death took place at his residence at Tong on 5th December 1892, in the fifty-fourth year of his age.
He became a Member of this Institution in 1883.
