GEORGE PHILLIPS JONES was born at Loughborough on 12th November 1864, and was educated at the Loughborough Grammar School.
On leaving school in 1880 he began an apprenticeship of five years with his father at the Britannia Foundry, Loughborough, who at that time was engaged in the manufacture of machinery and plant for many of the collieries, brickworks, plaster and cement works in Leicestershire and the Midlands.
He went through all the departments of the Works, and on the incorporation of the firm in 1897 he was appointed director and works manager, and these positions he held at the time of his death, which took place at Loughborough on 17th June 1917, at the age of fifty-two.
He designed and standardized various types of brick-making machines, which have been supplied in large numbers in various parts of the world, and among his other inventions may be mentioned a power wire-cutting table, brick boxes, pulley hangers, etc.
He was elected a Member of this Institution in 1903.
