It is with deep regret we announce the death of Mr. George Hopewell of Topsham. The deceased who for many years carried on the business of mechanical engineer, was a man well-known throughout the district, and held in the highest esteem all with whom he came in contact.
He retired from the business several years since, owing to ill-health, and his demise, which took place at his residence, Fore-street, Topsham, on Wednesday, was not unexpected.
For a number of years deceased occupied a seat the old Topsham School Board, was also captain of the Topsham Fire Brigade for many years, rendering the town signal service in this capacity.
Mr. Hopewell's wife predeceased him about thirty years ago. Deceased was a modeerate Liberal, but did not take any really prominent position in politics; he was also a Wesleyan and Freemason, belonging to the "Brent" Lodge. Deceased leaves four sons, two whom are New Zealand, and another in Bristol, while the other son is Mr. Thomas E. Hopewell, the Liberal agent for the South Molton Division.
