GEORGE HARRY THORNELY was born at Hyde, Cheshire, On 10th December 1852.
He served an apprenticeship of seven years with the firm of Messrs. J. and T. Thornely, of Hyde and Stockport, cotton manufacturers, and on its completion in 1873 he was employed for five years by J. Elce and Co., Manchester.
He next worked for Messrs. Taylor Lang and Co., of Stalybridge, and two years later went to India, where he was engaged on the erection of textile machinery.
In 1897 he was appointed superintending engineer of the Agra Cotton Bills, Agra, U.P., and was responsible for the erection of several large cotton mills.
His death took place at Agra on 31st July 1918, in his sixty-sixth year.
He became a Member of this Institution in 1915.
