George Dania (1860-1937)

1937 Obituary [1]

GEORGE DANIA, whose death occurred on 29th October 1937, only two months after his retirement at the age of 77, was in business for nearly forty years as an inspecting engineer in London.

He was born in 1860 and he served a four years' apprenticeship, terminating in 1880, with Messrs. MacNaught, of Rochdale. A year later he went to sea as a marine engineer and after two years' experience in this capacity he was employed as an erector in the workshops of various important engineering firms in Manchester. He began his work as an inspecting engineer in London in 1888, when he joined Messrs. Livesey, Son and Henderson in that capacity.

After holding that position for ten years he established his own business. He was also London agent for Messrs. John Stirk and Sons, of Halifax, for some years until 1914. During the War he was appointed to the inspecting staff of the Ministry of Munitions. In recent years his work was chiefly concerned with the inspection of materials for export, particularly for foreign railways, on behalf of various consulting engineers.

Mr. Dania was elected to Membership of the Institution in 1899, and was also a Member of the Institution of Electrical Engineers.
