Mortlach Distillery, Dufftown
1823 Mortlach was established as the first distillery in what was later to become a popular location for them, making Dufftown synonymous with malt whisky production. George Cowie became part owner in 1853 and outright owner in 1867. His son Alexander later joined him in the business.[1]
1923 Mortlach Distillery, and all its whisky stocks, was bought by John Walker and Sons Ltd.[2] A new company, George Cowie and Son Limited, was incorporated as a private company, with capital of £20,000, to carry on the business of distillers, blenders and wine and spirit merchants[3]
1925 The company was merged into the Distillers Co.
