GEOFFREY BRODRIBB SLATER, who died on 22nd February 1940, in his sixty-first year, had been associated with Messrs. W. H. Allen, Sons and Company, Ltd., Bedford, for the whole of his professional career. He was educated, from 1885 to 1896, at Evesham Grammar School and Lewisham House School, Weston-super-Mare.
In 1896, he became a premium pupil at Messrs. New and Mayne, general engineers, Woking, and from 1898 to 1903 he served his apprenticeship with Messrs. Allen. He was then employed on the outside engineering staff of that firm until 1907, being engaged on the supervision of erecting and running of auxiliary machinery on ships in Government dockyards, and at various shipbuilders' yards; he also attended and reported on the technical results of sea trials of ships of the Navy and Mercantile Marine.
Mr. Slater proceeded to Japan in 1907 to take up an appointment as assistant engineer with the Japan branch of his firm, a position which he held for 25 years. On returning to England he became area representative of Messrs. Allen and was engaged in negotiating contracts for power plant and waterworks pumping plant.
He was elected a Member of the Institution in 1929.
