1988 General Utilities was a subsidiary of Compagnie Generale des Eaux; it acquired stakes in 9 of the 29 small water companies that had escaped being incorporated in the water authorities established in 1974[1]

1997 Acquired Leigh Interests, a waste management company. Also held majority interests in 4 water supply companies in South East England.[2] and interests in 3 other water companies. GU would merge Leigh with its Onyx waste vehicles business, and Wistech and Trinco its liquid industrial waste treatment companies. [3]
