The company was the first that undertook to carry mail on a regular service of steamers to India and Australia via the Cape of Good Hope.
By 1851 the company already had a line of mail steamers running between England and the Cape.
To carry out the proposed new service to India and Australia, the company commissioned a number of vessels, six of them from C. J. Mare and Co of Blackwall, four of which were engined by Messrs Maudslay, one by Messrs Rennie of Blackriars, and one by Messrs Penn. Of these one of the largest was the Croesus, launched in 1853.
