1824 Company established by George and James Burns. Introduced the paddle steamer Fingal, of 296 tons, between Greenock and Belfast, which was larger than the PS Rob Roy which had been operating on that route since 1818.

1830s Owned the Manchester, engined by Caird and Co, operating a service between Glasgow and Liverpool in competition Messrs McIver's ship Vulcan.[1]

1851 The regular steamer service to the Inner and Outer Hebrides set up by G. and J. Burns was sold to David Hutcheson and Co

1906 Introduced triple-screw steamer, RMS Viper of 1712 tons, between Ardrossan and Belfast

1912 Introduced the twin-screw Ermine, 1777 tons, between Glasgow and Dublin

1920 Acquired by Coast Lines
