FREDERICK ROSE, who died on the 18th June, 1903, obtained his preliminary training in the works of the late Jabez James, with Thomas Horn and Sons, and at the Cadogan Ironworks.
In 1883 he accepted an engagement to proceed to Brazil, where he was employed on the Dom Pedro I. Railway, and on surveys of Sao Francisco Harbour and the Port of Desterro, for Hugh Wilson and Son, Contractors.
In 1885 he entered the service of the Lidgerwood Manufacturing Co, makers of colonial and agricultural machinery, for whom he superintended the erections of a new foundry, machine shops and offices at Campinas, Sao Paulo. He also interested himself in the coffee industry, and built several coffee-mills.
In partnership with F. W. Knowles he established a milling and export business in Santos, and acquired an expert knowledge of coffee.
Mr. Rose was elected an Associate Member of the Institution on the 4th December, 1888.
