FRANCOIS EDOUARD BOURDON, who was educated at the Ecole Centrale des Arts et Manufactures, was born in Paris and inherited the business of his father, [[Eugene Bourdon[[, the inventor of the celebrated Bourdon gauge.

He remained at the head of this firm until his death on 14th January 1926, in his eighty-first year.

Mr. Bourdon occupied prominent positions in several French engineering trades associations and was a member of the jury for the Paris Exhibitions in 1878, 1889 and 1900. He was an officer of the Legion of Honour and an officer of Public Instruction.

He became a Member of the Institution in 1878.
