Making patent anti-friction bearing metal in the 1840s. This was the subject of glowing testimonials from prominent engineers in 1844-5 (see advertisement).
The alloy was presumably James Fenton's patent antifrictional metal. Patent No. 10208 of 1844 [1]
Fenton's alloy was predominantly zinc (79%), with 16% tin and 5% copper.
