1854-61 Served a pupilage under Mr Handyside, concerned with the construction and erection of steam engines
1862-68 In charge of the erection of various London engineering works as assistant to Mr Handyside, including the Broad Street Station
1868-73 A member of the firm of Handyside and Co; supervised erection of the superstructure of the Albert Bridge and various bridges in Russia.
1871 Ewing Matheson 31, manufacturing engineer and ironfounder, lived in Hampstead with Antoinette Matheson 24, Margaret Matheson 2[2]
1875 Established business on his own account, particularly concerned with structural steelwork constructed by Messrs Handyside and Co
