1840 Born in Wolverhampton, son of James Matheson (a deputy minister in London in 1841[1])

1854-61 Served a pupilage under Mr Handyside, concerned with the construction and erection of steam engines

1862-68 In charge of the erection of various London engineering works as assistant to Mr Handyside, including the Broad Street Station

1868-73 A member of the firm of Handyside and Co; supervised erection of the superstructure of the Albert Bridge and various bridges in Russia.

1871 Ewing Matheson 31, manufacturing engineer and ironfounder, lived in Hampstead with Antoinette Matheson 24, Margaret Matheson 2[2]

1875 Established business on his own account, particularly concerned with structural steelwork constructed by Messrs Handyside and Co

1876 Elected a Member of the Institution of Civil Engineers

1881 His family was living in Hampstead but he was absent at the time of the census[3]

1887 Appointed managing director of Farnley Iron Co

1890 Consultant for the Electric Welding Syndicate

1891 Ewing Matheson 51, civil engineer, lived in Leeds, with Margaret Matheson 22, Edward E Matheson 19, pupil civil engineer, Atherton G E Matheson 16, Antoinetta E Matheson 14[4]

1901 Ewing Matheson 61, civil engineer, employer, lived in Leeds, with Antoinette A Matheson 55, Antoinette E Matheson 24, Mary Ewing Matheson 21[5]
