Professor M'Ewen was educated at Merchiston and University College, London, where he obtained the degree of B.Sc. (Eng.) with first class honours in mechanical engineering, and the Head Memorial Medal and Prize.
After a two years' Graduate Apprenticeship with David Brown & Son (Huddersfield), Ltd., he was appointed research engineer, and, in 1939, assistant works manager.
In 1942 he was commissioned in the R.A.O.C., transferring to R.E.M.E. on its formation and attaining the rank of Lieut.-Col. During most of his service, and on demobilization, he was assistant director of tank design, and then assistant chief engineer, fighting vehicles design.
In 1947 he was appointed to the first Chair of Agricultural Engineering in the United Kingdom, at King's College, Newcastle upon Tyne, University of Durham.
In 1952 he was, in addition, appointed Reader in Applied Mechanics and is in charge of that subject under the direction of the Professor of Mechanical Engineering.

Mr Ewen M'Ewen, M.Sc. (Eng.) (Member), was educated at Merchiston Castle School, Edinburgh, and at University College, London.
He served a graduate apprenticeship with David Brown and Sons (Huddersfield) Ltd, and was then successively draughtsman, Assistant Research Engineer, Research Engineer and Assistant Works Manager.
During the 1939-45 war, he was in the R.A.O.C. and R.E.M.E., being finally Lt-Colonel and Assistant Director of Tank Design.
Mr M'Ewen then became Professor of Agricultural Engineering and Reader in Applied Mechanics at King's College, Newcastle-upon-Tyne.
In 1955, he was appointed Director of the Armament Research Establishment and then in 1958 he took up his present appointment as Director of Engineering, Europe, of Massey-Ferguson Ltd.
Mr M'Ewen became a Student of the Institution in 1933, a Graduate in 1937, Associate Member in 1941 and Member in 1951. He was Hon. Secretary of the Yorkshire Graduates' Section from 1940-41. Mr M'Ewen is the author of two papers which have been published in the Proceedings of the Automobile Division.
