"EVELYN GEORGE BENJAMIN FOSTER spent almost the whole of his engineering career in the service of the Royal Arsenal, Woolwich, and the Port of London Authority. On the conclusion of a four years' apprenticeship with Messrs. Peter Jenkins and Sons, of St. Leonards-on-Sea, in 1902, he entered the Royal Arsenal as a draughtsman and was subsequently promoted to be leading draughtsman. In the meantime he attended classes at the Woolwich Polytechnic until he left the Arsenal in 1918 to become draughtsman at the Mechanical Transport Depot, Slough, where he was responsible for the erection of plant and the design and construction of a power station.
Two years later he began a connection with the Port of London Authority which lasted to the end of his career. After holding the position of first-class draughtsman for six years he was promoted to the post of assistant chief draughtsman in 1926. In 1935 he was appointed assistant engineer for both the London and St. Katharine and Surrey Commercial Docks. Subsequently he was in charge of the engineering work at Surrey Commercial Docks, and in July 1949 he was appointed acting divisional engineer at that control, which position he held at the time of his death. Mr. Foster, whose death in his sixty-fifth year occurred on 29th December 1948, was elected an Associate Member of the Institution in 1935."
