EVAN STEPHENS was born at Swansea on 3rd October 1870.
He received his education at Bishop Gores High School, Swansea, and at the Swansea and Swindon Technical Schools, and Clifton Engineering College, and gained a Whitworth Exhibition in 1893.
He became a pupil in 1887 at the works of the Villiers Engineering Co., near Swansea, and in 1890 entered the Great Western Railway workshops as improver.
In the following year he entered the drawing office and was subsequently promoted to be leading draughtsman.
In 1897 he was appointed covenanted draughtsman and personal assistant to the carriage and wagon superintendent of the East Indian Railway at Howrah, and was engaged on the design and erection of rolling stock and new workshops at Lillooah.
In 1902 he became assistant engineer on the Bengal-Nagpur Railway, Calcutta, having charge of the drawing and estimating offices and assisting generally in inspection work, and in 1906 he was promoted to take charge of the Calcutta District.
His health had for some time been very indifferent, and on medical advice he was transferred to the East Coast, but the change did not have the desired effect, and he had to take sick leave early in 1907.
His death took place at Weston-super-Mare, on 28th September 1908, in his thirty-eighth year.
He became an Associate Member of this Institution in 1906.
