ERNEST WILLIAM TURNER served an apprenticeship with Messrs. Hick, Hargreaves and Company of Bolton from 1886 to 1892, and in 1894 was sent by the firm, in whose employ he had remained, to Shanghai to take charge of their part of the contract for a cotton mill.
Two years later he joined the International Cotton Manufacturing Company as engineer-in-charge, and in 1901 became manager with a seat on the board of directors.
In 1903 he joined Messrs. Andrews and George and Company in charge of their machinery department, but in the following year opened his own office in Shanghai as a consulting engineer.
He was responsible for the design, construction, and reorganization of many cotton mills in China, and he was also sprinkler inspector to the Shanghai Fire Insurance Association.
Mr. Turner became a Member of the Institution in 1923, and his death occurred on 17th January 1929, at the age of 58.
