Ernest William Tipple (1885-1951)
1952 Obituary [1]
"ERNEST WILLIAM TIPPLE specialized in the design of machine tools throughout his career and had held the responsible position of chief designer to Alfred Herbert, Ltd., Coventry, for over twenty years. He was born in 1885 and served an apprenticeship with Joshua Buckton and Company, Ltd., Leeds, from 1900 to 1906, concurrently attending classes at the Leeds Central Technical School. After a further year's experience with that firm as machine tool draughtsman he held temporary positions in a similar capacity with the Low Moor Company, Ltd., Bradford, and Job Day and Sons, Ltd., Leeds. He returned, however, to Joshua Buckton in 1910 and for the next eleven years acted as engineering assistant to the managing directors. He was then appointed chief engineer and designer with responsibility for specifications, estimates, and the production of new designs. On the completion of a short engagement as chief draughtsman to Smith and Coventry, Ltd., Timperley, in 1929 he took up his final appointment with Alfred Herbert. Mr. Tipple retired on account of ill health some two months before his death, which occurred on 27th April 1951. He was elected an Associate Member of the Institution in 1921 and transferred to Membership three years later."
