Physicist

Sir Ernest Marsden, CMG CBE MC FRS. Born Manchester, 19 February 1889, died at Lower Hutt, Wellington, NZ, 15 December 1970.

Made an important observation while working under Ernest Rutherford at the University of Manchester, which led to the discovery of new theories on the structure of the atom.

He became Secretary of New Zealand's new Department of Scientific and Industrial Research (DSIR) in 1926.
