"ERNEST GREGORY, whose death occurred on 5th June 1949, in his sixty-ninth year, was elected an Associate Member of the Institution in 1914, and was transferred to Membership in 1943.
He was the author of a paper on "Power Transmission Gearing" (of which an abridged version was published in the PROCEEDINGS in 1930). His apprenticeship was served in Manchester between 1896 and 1901 with Messrs. Gresham and Craven, Ltd., and Messrs. Hans Renold and Company, Ltd. From 1904 to 1910 he was foreman in the automatic machine department of the latter firm.
After holding several short appointments, including that of works manager to Messrs. Hall and Stells, Ltd., makers of textile machinery, Keighley, and as a director of the Specialty Manufacturing Co, of Bradford, he was appointed chief engineer to Messrs. Bostock and Bramley, of Huddersfield, with whom he remained until 1926, when he became departmental and works manager to the Moss Gear Co, of Birmingham. After holding this position for sixteen years he received the appointment of manager and technical director of the Midlands branch of Messrs. Gaston E. Marbaix, Ltd., with responsibility for the installation, servicing, and design of American and British machine tools and fixtures. More recently he had been in business on his own account as a service engineer."
