Ernest E. W. Baumler (1827-1888)

1888 Obituary [1]

ERNST BAUMLER was born in 1827 at Wissenfels, in Prussia. He was educated, for the most part, at the Gymnasium at Eisleben, and then entered upon the business career of a colliery manager and engineer. In this capacity he was employed at collieries in the Saarbrucken, Westphalian, and Silesian coalfields respectively, and thereby became an authority on the subject of the coal resources of the German Empire.

In 1855, his exceptional knowledge of coal-mining was recognised by the German Government in conferring upon him the position of Inspector of Mines for the district of Dortmund.

In 1865 he became manager of the mining school at Bochum, an office he retained until the year 1869, when he became manager of the important works of the Konigshutte, in Silesia.

A year later he was appointed by the Prussian Government to the office of Oberbergrath, or chief mining adviser, at Breslau, and in the following year he undertook the general management of the works of the Prager Eisen-Industrie Gesellschaft at Vienna, which he held until the year 1886.

Mr. Baumler became a member of the Institute in 1883, having been nominated at the Vienna meeting which he attended in the previous year.
