"ERIC GORDON BARKER was a member of the Institution for over sixty years, having been elected a Graduate in 1888 and transferred to Associate Membership in 1893 and to Membership in 1896. He was born in 1867 and educated at Birkenhead School and Owens College, Manchester. After serving an apprenticeship at the Gorton works of the Manchester, Sheffield and Lincolnshire Railway from 1884 to 1888, he was employed as an improver in the pattern shop and drawing office of Dubs and Company, Ltd., Glasgow. In 1892 he was appointed locomotive and carriage superintendent to the Wirral Railway Company and held this position for ten years. He was then in private practice until 1904 when he accepted an appointment as chief mechanical engineer to the Sierra Leone Government Railway. He subsequently became general manager and held that appointment until his retirement in 1923. Mr. Barker's death took place on 15th January 1951."
