EDWIN JACOB died at Chipstead, Surrey, on the 6th April, 1948, at the age of 78. Having obtained his A.C.G.I., he spent a year as a pupil with the Cie Continentale d'filectricite", Brussels. From 1892 to 1895 he was Chief Engineer of the French branch of the Tudor Accumulator Co. In 1895, with Mr. Pescatore, he started a battery business in Manchester, and the following year he became Chief Engineer of the British Branch of the Tudor Accumulator Co. Later he-was made Managing Director, and he held that position until 1917. Meanwhile he had formed a subsidiary company, the Rail Welding Co., which was the pioneer of electric welding of tramway-rail joints on many services in this country and on the Continent. With the gradual disappearance of tramways he extended the applications of electric welding to structural welding on site, and the name of the company was changed to the more appropriate one of Rail and Structural Welding Co. Of this company he held the position of Managing Director (in an active capacity) until a few days before he died. Between the two wars he was for a time a Joint Managing Director of Britannia Batteries. He became a Member of The Institution in 1900.
