"EDWARD WATT was born in 1896 and received his general and technical education at Robert Gordon's College, Aberdeen. His apprenticeship, which was interrupted by four years' service in the Royal Engineers and the Royal Air Force, was served with Messrs. James Abernethy and Company, Ltd., engineers, of Aberdeen. From 1921 to 1928 he was at sea as marine engineer in vessels of the Straits Steamship Company, Ltd., of Singapore, rising from junior to chief engineer, and obtaining his first-class Straits Settlements Steam and Motor Certificate (the equivalent of that of the Board of Trade). After acting for a brief period as assistant consulting engineer he received, in 1929, a government appointment as surveyor of ships and inspector of machinery, at Singapore. On his return to England, in 1940, he took up residence in Birmingham, where his death occurred on 16th April 1948. Mr. Watt was elected a Graduate of the Institution in 1920 and was transferred to Associate Membership in 1931."
