1904 Died. '...Commencing business in a small way in Leeds, Mr. Simpson lived to see his enterprise develop into one the largest of its kind in the country. As wholesale and retail boot and shoe manufacturers the firm of Stead and Simpson has established reputation in many large towns besides Leeds, where it had, addition to other business, a large tannery, and for the success that attended the undertaking much was due to the business instinct and sound judgment of the deceased. On his retirement about fifteen years ago the business became a limited liability company. Since then he passed his time between Boston Spa and Scarborough. Formerly his partner, Mr. Stead, and himself lived at Manston Hall, and were from time time in residence there until the estate was purchased by Leeds Corporation for hospital purposes...'[1]
