MR. EDWARD LOYSEL, son and grandson of “Inghnieurs-en-chef des Ponts et Chaussdes,” was born in the year 1816, at Varnes (Morbihan), France.
In the years 1838-40 he was Professor of Natural Philosophy and of Industrial Mechanics at the Athenee Municipal de Marseilles, where his lectures obtained a great success, being attended by upwards of five hundred workmen, foremen, and others.
He was the author of several educational treatises, as 'Legons d’Arithmhtique Pure et Commerciale,' 'Manuel Arithmetique des Arts et Metiers,' &C., written principally for mechanics, as well as of several publications of general economy.
He was likewise the inventor of numerous articles of domestic utility, and of modes of making extracts from vegetable substances, such as dye-woods, beet-root, malt and hops, medicinal substances, &C., which he carried out on a large scale.
He came to reside in England in the year 1844, and became a naturalized British subject about the year 1849.
He was elected an Associate of the Institution of Civil Engineers in March, 1855, having in the previous session furnished some particulars of his hydrostatic percolator’ for extracting colouring matters from dyewoods, and also for obtaining infusions or extracts of vegetable substances for medicinal or other purposes.
His decease occurred on the 29th of September, 1865.
