EDWARD LAMBERT HOPKINS. Mr. E. L. Hopkins, M.C., died on 10 December 1946 in his fifty-sixth year.
Educated at King Edward's High School, Mr. Hopkins won his cap in the school Rugby team and matriculated in 1912.
He commenced his degree course in metallurgy in September of that year, under Professor T. Turner, at Birmingham University, but at the end of his second year war was declared and in August 1914 he enlisted in the City Battalion, later being commissioned in the 2nd Bn., The Worcestershire Regiment. He served for four years in France, chiefly in trench warfare, and attained the acting rank of Major, being awarded the Military Cross, and later a bar to the M.C., for valour in the field.
On demobilization, Mr. Hopkins - owing to his father's illness - succeeded to the position of head of the copper refinery of the Birmingham Battery and Metal Company, Ltd., and successfully carried on that work until November 1946, when he was stricken with the illness which caused his death.
