Mr. Edward Fiske Browne was born at Norwich, in the year 1820, and after the usual preparatory studies, became, in 1835, the pupil of John Braithwaite (M.Inst.C.E.), by whom he was very early intrusted with the superintendence of important works on the Eastern Counties Railway, where, as one of the resident engineers, he distinguished himself by the energy, skill, and perseverance, with which he combated difficulties of no ordinary character.
He had since been extensively engaged on railway surveys, and in arbitrations of magnitude, the devotion to which impaired his health, and led to the too early termination of a valuable life, during which, however, he had won the esteem of all with whom he had been connected.
He was elected an Associate of the Institution in the year 1845, and frequently attended the meetings. His decease occurred suddenly, on the 16th of September, 1850, regretted by a large circle of friends.
