EDWARD CROSS had been chief engineer of the Rotherham Corporation Electricity Department since 1901. From 1905 to 1917 he was also in charge of the Tramways Department. While he held these appointments Mr. Cross was responsible for many important improvements, including the erection of a new power station having 55,000 kW. capacity, and he patented the steering collector shoe for use when trackless trolley vehicles are run on tramways.
Mr. Cross was born at Whitehaven in 1874 and served his apprenticeship from 1887 to 1891 with the National Telephone Company.
He then joined the Preston Electric Supply Company and three years later took charge of the Bolton Road works of the Bradford Corporation. He was afterwards appointed assistant city electrical and tramways engineer of the Aberdeen Corporation, a position which he held until 1901.
Mr. Cross was elected an Associate Member of the Institution in 1905 and was transferred to Membership in 1925.
His death occurred on 17th April 1933.
