EDMOND RICH GABBETT, born at Corbally, Limerick, on the 28th February, 1852, died at St. Leonards on the 24th January, 1914.
He served his apprenticeship at the locomotive works of Messrs. Robert Stephenson and Company, Newcastle-on-Tyne, and in 1876 was appointed Chief Engineer to Messrs. Burt, Boulton and Haywood, to which office he subsequently added the duties of General Manager of works, retaining both until his death. In this dual capacity he was responsible for the extensive works of the firm, and for their fleet of steamers.
Among other ingenious devices he invented the Gabbett mixer for fluids.
Mr. Gabbett was elected an Associate of The Institution on the 6th February, 1877, was subsequently placed among the Associate Members, and was transferred to the class of Members on the 8th December, 1891.
