"EDGAR HENRY BENCE was the managing director of [[Ham Baker and Co|Messrs. Ham Baker and Company, Ltd]]., engineers, of Langley Green, Birmingham, and had been associated with the firm for forty-eight years. He received his technical education (which extended over nine years) at the West Bromwich Technical Institute, and served his apprenticeship with [[Thornewill and Warham|Messrs. Thornewill and Warham, Ltd.]], of Burton-on-Trent, from 1891 to 1897, with whom he remained for a brief period as a junior draughtsman. After further experience in the same capacity with the [[Aluminium Co|Aluminium Company, Ltd]]., of Oldbury, he began, in 1899, his long connection with Messrs. Ham Baker, with the post of works draughtsman.
Two years later he was promoted to chief draughtsman in the London office, with the charge of erection of sewerage and waterworks machinery. He was appointed a director in 1910, and after three years became assistant managing director. His appointment as managing director dated from 1917. Mr. Bence, whose death occurred in May 1947 in his seventy-first year, was elected an Associate Member of the Institution in 1908, and was transferred to Membership in 1935."
