DUNCAN FORREST BAUCHOP, B.E. (N.Z.), who was born in 1884, was educated in New Zealand at Dunedin Boys' High School and Canterbury College School of Engineering. His apprenticeship was served with [[Stevenson and Cook|Messrs. Stevenson and Cook]], Port Chalmers, from 1903 to 1907, after which he gained experience as a draughtsman in the public works department and for a brief period acted as assistant to the engineer-in-chief. He was next engaged as a lecturer in engineering at Christchurch Technical College, but in 1915 he joined the [[Royal Navy]], in which he served for four years as engineer lieutenant.
