DAVID ALEXANDER COUTTS received his technical education at Robert Gordon's College, Aberdeen, and after serving his apprenticeship from 1891 to 1897 with Messrs. William McKinnan and Company, continued in the employment of that firm for a further eight years, being first engaged as draughtsman in the estimating department and subsequently as chief assistant.

In 1908 he received an appointment as manager to the Bon-Accord Engineering Company, Ltd., and began a connection which lasted for twenty-eight years. He then accepted a similar position with the North Eastern Welding Company, Ltd., and held that appointment until his death, which occurred on 10th May 1943, in his sixty-ninth year.

Mr. Coutts had been an Associate Member of the Institution since 1905.
