Darlington Gasworks

Gasworks built in North Highgate, Darlington, originally private. Horizontal retorts were originally used.

1854 the gasworks were acquired by Darlington Corporation.

1914 Glover-West vertical retorts were installed

Further installations in 1924 & 1951.

Operated CWG and oil gas.

The gasworks were eventually arranged between 3 sites on either side of the River Skerne with another GH site to the north of the railway line.

1949 Vested in the Northern Gas Board

A new Depot and Gasholder Station were later built by the NGB.
