CUTHBERT RIDLEY LEE was born in Newcastle-on-Tyne on 26th May 1852.

He served his apprenticeship from 1867 to 1873 in the works of Messrs. J. and G. Joicey and Co., of Newcastle-on-Tyne, and on its completion remained with the same firm as draughtsman.

From 1875 to 1876 he was engaged as draughtsman by Messrs. Bells, Lightfoot and Co., of Walker-on-Tyne, during which time he gained a local scholarship of £50 at the government science classes. Afterwards he superintended the erection of their machinery in the North.

Subsequently and up to the year 1880 ho acted as their manager in London, when he became engineer in the south for Messrs. John Abbot and Co., of Gateshead-on-Tyne. In this capacity he superintended the erection of their machinery at various docks and gas works.

From 1880 to 1896 he was a partner in the firm of Messrs. J. Coates and Co., engineers of London and Melbourne, and from 1896 was in business as C. R. Lee and Co.

His death took place at Dunmow, Essex, on 22nd April 1903, in his fifty-first year.

He became a Member of this Institution in 1887.
