Crook and Dean: Phoenix

From Graces Guide

Note: This is a sub-section of Crook and Dean

1831 1831 'We have had occasion to admire a new locomotive engine, made by Messrs. Crook and Dean, mill-wrights, engineers, etc. Little Bolton. The engine is called the "Phoenix," and can run at the speed of 30 miles an hour with 20 loaded waggons. She is only guaranteed by the makers to take 45 tons at the rate of 15 miles an hour in a straight line. She has run about five weeks between Bolton and Kenyon, on the Bolton and Leigh railway, and is at present engaged conveying Mr. Hulton's coal-waggons on the line; she has gone up the inclined plane Bolton at the rate of 20 miles an hour, which is a much great speed than has been accomplished by any other engine.'[1]
