1823 The city was first lit with gas from a private gasworks in the city centre.

1856 The City of Durham Gas Co. was formed. The city centre gasworks were replaced with a gasworks located on the side of the River Wear at Framwellgate

1873 Company incorporated.

1908 Directors: J. Coward (Chairman), C. Rowlandson (Vice-Chairman), G. Chapman, M. Hayton, J. Mawson, R. Ord, and J. Willan. Secretary: T. M. Waller.

1914 Alf B. Tobey resigned as engineer to move to Australia.[1]

1941 Gas making ceased in favour of a supply from Brancepeth Coke Ovens.

The Framwellgate site was retained as a gasholder station.

A single gasholder survived until at least 1990 but has since been cleared.
