CHARLES VALON BENNETT was for twenty-six years engineer, general manager, and secretary of the Rochester, Chatham, and Gillingham Gas Company. He was born at Walton-on-Thames in 1887 and after completing his general education he became a pupil in the works of the Herne Bay Gas and Coke Company. He was appointed assistant engineer to the company in 1907, and in 1910 he joined the Dartford (now the South Suburban) Gas Company in a similar capacity.
His long connection with the Rochester, Chatham, and Gillingham Gas Company dated from 1913, and lasted until his death which occurred at Rochester on 18th November 1940. Mr. Bennett was responsible for the construction of the entire gas works, with the coal and coke handling plant, and steam and electrical equipment, and a gas holder of 1,500,000 cu. ft. capacity.
He was elected a Member of the Institution in 1935 and was a past-president of the Institution of Gas Engineers.
