Born at Lewiston, Maine, U.S.A., Mr. Merriam was educated in America and Germany. He came to England with his parents when he was fifteen, and began his business career with the [[English Condensed Milk Co|English Condensed Milk Company]] in London. | |||
In 1877 his father, with others, started the [[British Xylonite Co|British Xylonite Company, Ltd.]], and the manufacture of celluloid, and the death of his father in 1889 Mr. Merriam succeeded the management of this Company, which has factories at Brantham, near Manningtree, and in London. | |||
Mr. Merriam retired in July, 1927, and was succeeded by his son, Mr. G. F. Merriam. | |||
The deceased qualified as a Justice of the Peace for Essex in 1912. | |||

The funeral took place on Tuesday, the service being held at St. Andrew's Church, conducted the Vicar (Canon T. H. Curling, R.D.). The mourners were: Mr. L. P. B. Merriam and Lady M. Merriam, son and daughter-in-law, Dr. and Mrs. J. A. Glover, Lt.-Col. and Mrs. O. V. Viney, sons-in-law and daughters; Mrs. C. F. Merriam, daughter-in-law ; Mrs. E. W. Conbrough. sister; Miss Brooke, sister-in-law; Mrs. Roscoe. cousin; Mr. J. F. P. Merriam and Mr. M. Glover, grandsons; C. E. M. and Mr. J. A. Conbrough, nephews. Mr. C,. P. Merriam (son) is in Australia on business. There was a large attendance of magistrates, officials, representatives of the companies with which Mr. Merriam was connected, and the general public, and the police were present under Insp. Chaplin and P.s Maynard. | |||
