He was born in London, and received his education at Christ's Hospital. When he reached the age of fifteen he commenced his business career in the London office of [[Samuel Beale and Co|Samuel Beale & Co.]], who were then proprietors of the Parkgate Ironworks, Rotherham. | |||
In 1864 the firm was converted into a limited company, and he became first secretary and eventually managing director. During the period of his management great developments took place at the Parkgate works. He advised the Board to embark in the steel trade, and from designs which he made a plant was installed which is now amongst the foremost of the country. | |||
Later in life the king recognised his worth by conferring the honour of knighthood upon him. He was also associated with the [[Dalmelling Iron Co|Dalmelling Iron Company, Ltd.]], and the [[Staveley Coal and Iron Co|Staveley Coal and Iron Company, Ltd]]. | |||

Sir CHARLES JOHN STODDART died on May 24, 1913, at his residence, Blenheim House, Rotherham, aged seventy-one.
