Charles Herbert Holt (1828-1887)

1828 Born in Halifax the son of Luke Holt and his wife Hannah Crawshaw

1841 Living on Kings Cross Road, Halifax, with mother and two sisters.[1]

1849 Married(1) in Manchester Cathedral to Hannah Kenworthy.[2]

1851 Birth of son Charles Kenworthy Holt in Manchester

1851 Living at 37 Apollo Street, Manchester (family living on Trinity Street, Huddersfield).[3]

1853 Birth of son Luke John Holt

1854 Patent. '618. And Thomas Stephen Holt and Charles Herbert Holt, of the city of Manchester, in the county of Lancaster, Engineers, have given the like notice in respect of the invention of "improvements in steam-boilers."'[4]

1856 Birth of son Richard George Holt

1856 Patent for “improvements in steam boilers, furnaces for the same, and apparatus connected therewith

1857 Insolvent. 'Charles Herbert Holt, formerly of 359, Oldham-road, Manchester, operative engineer; afterwards carrying on business at 15, Lune (Lime?) -street, Oldham Road aforesaid, as engineer and boiler maker, and patentee for improvements in boilers and apparatus connected therewith; and late of 359, Oldham Road, Manchester aforesaid, out of business (sued as Charles Hibbert Holt).'[5]

1858 February 6th. Appointed inspector for the Huddersfield Steam Boiler Association

1859 May 14th. Implicated in boiler explosion at Learoyd’s Mill, Lane, Huddersfield (Robert Longridge testifies)

1860 Resigns from Huddersfield Steam Boiler Association and assumes inspector role at Manchester Steam Boiler Assurance Co

1860 February 11th. Implicated again in letter from William Arnold, boilermaker

1860 February 18th. Replies to accusation from William Arnold

1860 Publication “a new work on engineering and boiler-making with hints and suggestions for the use of employers of steam power, compiled from 14 years practical experience in some of the first railway locomotive, marine and stationary engineering establishments in the kingdom”

1861 Living at 18 Trinity Street, Huddersfield with family.[6]

1862 Patent for “improvements in steam engines and boilers, and in apparatus connected therewith, part of which improvements is also applicable to raising and measuring fluids generally”

1863 Birth of illegitimate child with mistress Jane Watson

1864 Tried and fined in relation to the poisoning of Jane Watson in an effort to cause a miscarriage

1864 Employed by West Riding Steam Ploughing Co to inspect engines and boilers

1864 Reports at inquest concerning boiler explosion at Grove Mill, Longwood, Huddersfield

1864 June. Reports at inquest concerning boiler explosion at Sharlston Colliery

1866 Patent for “improvements in obtaining adhesion of the driving wheels of locomotive engines to the rails of railways”

1867 November. Attempts to sue Hannah Kinder for charging too great a toll on his traction engine

1867 November 8th. Death of son Charles Kenworthy Holt, typhoid, West Parade, Huddersfield

1867 December 3rd. Death of wife Hannah Holt (nee Kenworthy), typhoid, West Parade, Huddersfield

1868 Employed by Starkey Brothers to replace boilers and design new buildings at Longroyd Mill, Huddersfield (see 08/04/1873 Starkey article)

1868 August. Fined for breaching the locomotive act when driving his traction engine

1868 August. Reports on locomotive at crop fire inquest Carter vs Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway Company

1868 September. Tried and fined for damage to a house door, West Parade, Huddersfield

1869 Patents for “improvements on operating piston valves of steam engines” and “improvements in boilers for operating steam and in apparatus connected therewith for heating the f... water” with Charles John Galloway

1869 July. Drives his traction engine through Huddersfield towing 15-ton stone bound for Longroyd Mill as part of the Starkey Bros contract. (Biggest stone brought to Huddersfield at the time)

1869, Ptent for “improvements in apparatus for obtaining blast in smelting and other furnaces, which improvements are also applicable in injecting air for other purposes”

1870 June. Auction of traction engine, partly built steam omnibus and other machinery, at Lane, Huddersfield

1871 Lodging at boarding house, 11 Great Ducie Street, Manchester.[7]

1871 Patent for “improvements in steam boiler and other furnaces” (application made on same day as Joseph Knowles Broadbent who is mentioned in the 1880 divorce record below!)

1873 April. Sues Starkey Brothers for outstanding payment regarding Longroyd Mill contact

1873 September 20th. Married(2) Hannah Dale, 57 Great Ducie Street, Manchester

1875 Patent for “praying for letters patent for the invention of steam boilers was deposited and recorded in the offices of the commissioners on 13th day of July 1875 and a complete specification accompanying such petition was at the same time filed in the said office” with Charles John Galloway

1875 September. Explosion of patented ‘economiser’ at factory of T. Haigh and Sons, Colne Bridge, Huddersfield

1875 Patent. 'In-the Matter of Letters Patent granted to Charles John Galloway, of the Knott Mill. Iron Works, Manchester, in the county of Lancaster, Engineer, and Charles Herbert Holt, of Manchester aforesaid, Engineer, for the invention of " improvements in steam boilers," bearing date at Westminster the 13th July, 1875 (No. 2514).[8]

1876 Patent for “an invention of a new or improved method of and apparatus for steaming or blowing woven fabrics in the process of dyeing and finishing” with Oates Ingham

1876 July 31st. Birth of daughter Florence Elizabeth Holt

1876 Patent for “improvement in steam boilers” with Charles John Galloway

1877 July. Chairs a meeting of creditors regarding the liquidation of W. E. Normington’s business

1880 December 10th. Petition for divorce from Hannah Holt (nee Dale) on grounds of adultery with Joseph Knowles Broadbent

1881 February. Found in contempt of court having abducted daughter Florence and fled to America

1881 March 21st. Arrives at the Port of Philadelphia, PA, USA on the S.S. Pennsylvania, American Lines

1885 Patent for “grate for boiler furnaces”

1885 Patent for “tube cleaner for fuel economizers or feed water heaters”

1887 Patent for “feed water heater”

1887 December 21st. Died of apoplexy and is buried in Greenwood Cemetery, Philadelphia, PA, USA
