"CHARLES HENRY DUTTON was closely identified with the Great Southern and Western Railway of Ireland during practically the whole of his professional career, and before his retirement in 1926 rose to be its chief mechanical engineer.
He was born in 1866 and served his time in the Inchicore works of the company from 1883 to 1889, in the meantime attending classes at the Mechanic's Institute. After working as a junior in the drawing office for four years he was for a brief period assistant to the signal superintendent of the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway at Manchester. On his return to the works at Inchicore he was made senior draughtsman, in which capacity he was chiefly concerned with the design of locomotives, carriages, and wagons. He was promoted to be chief draughtsman in 1895 and in due course took over the duties of chief mechanical engineer. Mr. Dutton, whose death occurred at the age of eighty-five on 5th March 1951, was elected an Associate Member of the Institution in 1908."
