1931 After much discussion the London County Council decided to promote a Bill for the construction of a road bridge at Charing Cross, subject to the Government providing 75 per cent. of the cost. The Government, however, decided that it was not prepared to renew its offer, and as a result, Charing Cross Bridge was not built but Waterloo Bridge was demolished and replaced by a new bridge to carry six lines of traffic.
