Boiler explosions were all too frequent in the 19th century.

The main causes were overpressure, low water level, and poor design or construction. Ignorance or negligence on the part of operators and owners was commonplace.

In some cases, contemporary newspaper accounts have been transcribed in full, as they reveal interesting aspects of engineering and social history.
