Caleb Brett and Son

1885 Caleb Brett, a Kent farmer, also owned a business exporting grain to Russia and importing Russian furs and other goods to Great Britain. He realized that an independent, impartial, cargo inspection service was needed to regulate cargo quality and reduce business risks associated with the global trade in high value commodities so he started a new business to certify the quality and quantity of grain cargoes prior to shipment.
Mr Brett's approach to the business was "I will treat each cargo as if it were my own."
The emerging petroleum industry provided a new opportunity for marine cargo inspection and testing. Caleb Brett's company expanded to offer inspection and laboratory services to customers in a growing number of nations.
1952 Caleb Brett and Son was in members' liquidation[1]
1961 With Yarsley Testing Laboratories formed a new division, Brett Yarsley Services (under the name B.Y.S. Laboratories) with laboratory at Chessington to provide services to the petroleum, chemical and shipping industries[2]
1984 Inchcape acquired the Caleb Brett group of companies
1990 Caleb Brett Laboratories Ltd was wound up[3]
