1853 Established by Charles Foster Earle and William Joel Earle as C. and W. Earle.
1861 The company had originally been based at a smaller yard before a fire forced a move in to the riverfront just to the east of Victoria Dock. This new yard covered an impressive 26 acres.
1865 The second largest builder of ships in 1865 with a total tonnage of 9,514 and consisting of nine steamers.
1871 Charles Earle died 1870 and his brother was in bad health and died in 1871.
Consequently, the yard was taken over by Earle's Shipbuilding and Engineering Co which was a consortium of shareholders.
