- Frederick Rhead worked at Mintons and Wedgwood, and was then appointed Art Director of Wileman and Co (Shelley) around the turn of the century.
- Later after a brief attempt at running his own business with some partners he was given the job as Art Director for Wood and Sons. He taught his daughter, Charlotte, the art of tube-lining which was then in its infancy, and gave her her first break at Wood and Sons.
- 1920 Frederick Rhead and Harry Wood, purchased the Crown Pottery and set up Bursley Ltd, to produce art pottery. Daughter Charlotte Rhead joined the new company until 1926.
- 1921 A subsidiary of Wood and Sons Ltd.
