August 1894. The vaults.

This was the largest ever import of wine, brought about by the great fall in exchange between Potugal and England in 1892. This enabled Messrs Burnay and Co to offer their wine at a lower price to the English merchants than what they themselves had paid! The profits were used to reinvest in silver to boost the Potuguese economy. The wines were carefully selected ny Southard and Co from the very best available in Oporto, such as Sandeman, Croft, Taylor Fladgate, Ferreira and Miguel Guedes, [1]
