1954. From Good Housekeeping magazine of July.

The Brillo Pad was invented in the early 1900s by a cookware peddler and his brother-in-law, a jeweller, as a solution to cleaning blackened cookware.

After demand for the product took off, they offered New York lawyer Milton Loeb a share of the profits in exchange for assistance in protecting their invention, a "scouring pad" made of fine steel wool and jeweler's rouge. Loeb obtained a patent in 1913 under the trademark Brillo, from the Latin word for "bright."

  • 1930s The soap began to be sold with the soap contained within the pad.
  • 1962 The company merged with Purex Industries.
  • 1985 The Dial Corporation bought Purex Industries.
